Plumbers – They are more than just drains and pipes

As trades go, plumbers are always going to be in demand. A plumber is the go to person if you’ve got a  leak, your sink is blocked or if your toilet isn’t flushing properly.

In fact, when you think about it, the list of jobs a skilled qualified plumber can turn their hand to can be as long as your arm. Some jobs, like fixing annoying dripping taps and unblocking toilets and sinks can be rather menial – although they are the bread and butter jobs that keep most plumbers ticking over. But plumbing as an occupation covers a variety of roles and skill levels. It’s not all about fixing leaks and unblocking blockages.

Generally speaking plumbers are skilled in the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems in and around the home, namely those used for drainage, sewage and drinking water. A good plumber will rely on their knowledge and experience, however there are no formal qualifications needed to trade as a plumber.

However, if a plumber also trades as a central heating engineer – which is quite common – then they have to be Gas Safe Registered to undertake any work with gas and central heating systems.

In the UK the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) is the professional body for the plumbing and heating industry. CIPHE was set up to promote professionalism within the heating and plumbing industry and members have to be vetted before they are allowed to join.

What sort of work does a plumber do

A plumber will be able to undertake a variety of jobs, from general plumbing jobs to more specialist work like complete bathroom installations. Some of the most common plumbing jobs include:

  • Fixing leaks such as leaking pipes and taps
  • Clearing blockages, like blocked sinks and toilets
  • Installing kitchen appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers
  • Bathroom installations
  • Fitting pipes

When it comes to finding a plumber to undertake general plumbing jobs or more specialist plumbing work in your home, there’s a few things you need to consider beforehand. Call it top tips if you like; our handy advice should help the process of finding a suitable plumber that little bit easier.

Check list for employing a plumber

  • We recommend getting 3 quotes to determine how much the job is going to cost, which Builder Guide can do for you. We make things easier for you by sourcing free no obligation quotes from checked, approved and recommended plumbers in your area.
  • Recommendations are great. Ask around to see if any of your neighbours, work colleagues or friends or family know of a plumber who has particularly impressed.
  • Do a bit of research it you have time – it’ll give you added peace of mind. For instance, do they have a good reputation? Ask around, search the Internet. If a plumber has been in business for a considerable period of time then it tends to be a good sign. It’s usually wise to go with an established plumber, although of course everyone has to start somewhere. Even a plumber with 20 years experience under his belt was a newbie in the industry at one time.
  • Check that the plumber is registered with a professional trade body. And that they are insured. Accidents do happen, after all.
  • Make sure any quotes you obtain detail clearly the work to be carried out and how much it will cost.

Whether you’ve got a blocked drain, a toilet that’s misbehaving or need a bathroom suite installing, why not let Builder Guide do the hard work for you. We can provide three quotes for you from approved recommended plumbers. To get started all you need to do is fill out the quote form. It’s free and you’re under no obligation.
