The traditional means of plastering from the 18th Century was laths – the horizontal strips of wood nailed to a vertical upright timber framework – and plaster.
However, if working with walls that are brick, block or stone, the typical finish is plaster.
Three layers are applied – the render, the floating and the setting layer.
In the past the plaster was lime, but this was soon replaced with gypsum or cement-based plasters to speed-up the setting time.
Modern day plasters are premixed gypsum based for the render and finishing plasters.
